Washington DC

​The HLV High School has visited Washington DC every four years since 1991.  


​Students have the opportunity to sell items over the four years preceding their trip to help with their expenses.  


​The Victor American Legion sponsors a pancake breakfast every year with proceeds going towards the trip expenses.  HLV students help at this event.


1991 - 96 students and 10 adults attended.  The student cost was $170.

Monday-Band students to Fort Meade for clinic with Army Band, non-band to Smithsonian, tour of FBI building, Ford's Theater, Peterson House

The following fundraisers were held to help fund the first trip:

9th grade-Chili supper, ice cream bars and raffle

10th grade-Valentine cookies w/messages, school dance, concessions at bingo

11th grade-Lapel ribbons and red/white/blue bows

12th grade-Pizza and burrito sale

Other fundraisers included a pops concert, bake sale, ice scraper sale, bingo, atlas sale and pancake breakfast.  Students could also be rented out to help with "chores".  Other financial support came from individual business donations, HLV Music Booster donations, and funding from the HLV school. 

 1995 DC Trip-138 of the 166 students attended.  The cost was $210.00.  

Students departed from the Cedar Rapids Airport on 3 flights arriving in the capitol before 11:00 a.m.  Friday schedule-tour FBI building, tour Pentagon, night view of the lighted monuments and memorials.  Saturday-White House Tour, Ford's Theater, Petersen House, Band & swing choir performance at Navy Memorial, Holocaust Memorial Museum, Smithsonian Museums, Ford's Theater Show (Nunsense II).  Sunday-Washington Monument, Performance at Lincoln Memorial, White House picture, Old Town Alexandria, Mount Vernon, night view of lighted monuments and memorials part 2.  Monday-Bureau of engraving and printing, Arlington National Cemetery Tomb of the Unknowns and wreath laying ceremony, Capitol Hill tour including visit to the House and Senate, meet with Senator or Representative, Library of Congress picture stop, group photo in front of capitol, Smithsonian Museums, Supreme Court building.  

1999 Washington DC Trip  130 students, 15 adults.  The cost was $250 each.

Friday-Old Post Office, lunch at Union Station, Jefferson Memorial, Ford's Theater, Peterson House, National Archives (Constitution, Declaration of Independence, Bill of Rights), Franklin Delanor Roosevelt Memorial, Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. 

Saturday-White House & Garden Tour, Washington National Monument, Pentagon City Mall, Arlington National Cemetery (Kennedy grave sites and Challenger Memorial, Tomb of the Unknown Soliders (changing of the Guard and Wreath laying ceremony, Mount Vernon (George Washington's Estate), boat cruise on the Potomac River.

Sunday-Museum of American History, Holocaust Museum, Air & Space Museum, Embassy Row, Old Town Alexandria, Washington National Cathedral, Lazy Susan Dinner Theater (Shenandoah).

111 students participated and 26 adults accompanied the students.  The trip cost the students $300.  

Itinerary-  Friday-Lunch at Union Station, meet Congressman Boswell at Capitol, Capitol Hill House and Senate galleries, Supreme Court picture stop, Memorial viewing of FDR Memorial and Jefferson Memorial, dinner at Pentagon City Mall. 

Saturday- Arlington National Cemetery, Kennedy Gravesites, Tomb of the Unknown Soldier & Changing of the Guard, Alexandria Drive Through, Mt. Vernon (home of George Washington), Cruise at Mt. Vernon, Ford's Theater, Hard Rock Cafe Gift Shop, Bellston Commons meal, Lincoln Memorial, Korean Memorial, Vietnam Veteran's Memorial, Vietnam Women's Memorial, Dance.  

Sunday-Optional Church Service, Embassy Row & National Cathedral, Georgetown Drive Through, Iwo Jima Marine Memorial, Kennedy Center, Holocaust Museum, "Guys and dolls" Dinner Theater.  

Monday-White House group photo, ride Metro Rail, Washington Monument, Lunch at Air & Space Cafe, Air & Space Museum, tour Smithsonian Complex (National History Museum, American History Museum). 

 2007 Washington DC Trip

 106 Students and 15 adults traveled to DC in 2007

Sites visited were Washington Monument, Ford's Theater/Peterson House, The Awakening, George Mason Memorial, FDR Memorial, Jefferson Memorial, National Archives, Mount Vernon, National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial, Library of Congress, Supreme Court, Embassy Row, National Cathedral, Toby's Dinner Theater, Iwo Jima Memorial, Air Force Memorial, Smithsonian complex, Air & Space Museum, Native American Museum, Natural History Museum, Holocaust Museum, White House, Vietnam Memorial, Lincoln Memorial, Korean War Memorial, World War II Memorial, Kennedy Center, U.S. Capitol, Arlington National Cemetery (Wreath Laying Ceremony, Changing of the Guard, Tomb of the Unknown),  Reagen Building, Union Station, Air & Space Cafe, and Pentagon City Mall.

 2011 Washington DC trip-  101 students and 25 adults attended student cost for the trip was in the $450 range.

Itinerary was as follows- Friday-Reagan International Trade Center and Embassy Row, National Cathedral Guided Tour, National Zoo, Washington Monument picture stop, National Archives, FDR Memorial and Jefferson Memorial, Lincoln Memorial.  Saturday-Mt. Vernon cruise, Mt. Vernon home tour of George Washington along with Education Center with house and grounds tour, Arlington National Cemetery changing of the guard and wreath laying, Pentagon City Mall and September 11 Pentagon Memorial, Smithsonian Complex, Air & Space Museum, Natural History Museum, American History Museum, Toby's Dinner Theater.  Sunday-Iwo Jima Marine Memorial, US Air Force Memorial, Holocaust Museum, shops at National Place, The Newseum, White House picture stop, Vietnam Veterans Memorial, Vietnam Women's Memorial, Korean  Memorial, World War II Memorial, Kennedy Center Rooftop Tour.  Monday-Capitol Hill, Library of Congress, Supreme Court picture stop, meet with Senator Grassley on Senate steps, meet with Congressman Boswell, Union Station, additional sightseeing at Smithsonian Museum.
